Soft Cells

Soft Cells, glazed ceramics, each cells: 45 x 23 x 18cm

In 1980s television magic shows, women enter boxes whole, only to emerge in pieces, reassembled in the wrong order, or simply vanish, concealing the violence of an oppressive patriarchal system behind a burlesque spectacle.

In the series Soft Cell, Charlotte Dualé re-enacts this spectacle through a variation of ceramic boxes that evoke, for the artist, those used by magicians. Limbs either protrude from the boxes, asserting their presence, or contort themselves in an attempt to fit inside.
